Hold the presses! Did the New York Times just endorse open primaries???? Well, there just may be hope yet for Mississippi!

OPEN PRIMARIES

• For Congress in New York’s Ninth District (EDITORIAL NY Times) Their options — chosen, unfortunately, by the parties’ leaders instead of in open primaries — are Assemblyman David Weprin, a Democrat, and Bob Turner, a Republican and former communications executive. The choice is clear: Mr. Weprin would represent the district with far more expertise, sensitivity and fiscal rationality. 


• Making elections better, more efficient should always be a top priority for county officials (Scott County Times - MS) Much is being debated about the need for open primaries to give voters a better opportunity for choices in their favored candidates. Unfortunately, there is not much we can do here in Scott County to make that happen other than to send representatives to Jackson that would speak for us on that matter.

Two Chances for the GOP - Turner, Niehaus Endorsed by the Sun (Editorial of The New York) The special elections on September 13 include two in which there is a possibility of bringing in Republicans to fill seats taken for granted by Democrats. One of them, to fill the seat vacated by Congressman Anthony Weiner, features a Republican, in Robert Turner, who has come within six points of a Weiner-like Democrat, David Weprin, according to the latest poll. In the other, a Republican, Paul Niehaus, is running on the Upper East Side of Manhattan against a union-backed Democrat, Daniel Quart, to fill the seat in the state assembly vacated by Jonathan Bing, when he resigned to join Governor Cuomo’s administration.

• David Is Goliath (LETTER To The Editor, Queens Tribune) Turner will have to rely primarily on ordinary, local, non-political, community-based volunteers. Other than Councilman Eric Ulrich and Brooklyn State Sen. Marty Golden, he has no local GOP/Conservative public officials to assist him. His recent endorsement by former Mayor Ed Koch will move some Jewish, Democratic and Independent voters into Turner’s column. Unfortunately for Turner, many of Koch’s supporters from decades ago have moved out of town or passed away.
